《生命科学概论》从生命的基本化学组成、细胞、代谢、遗传、分子生物学、生态和生物安全等方面较系统地介绍了生命科学重要的基础知识、基本的生物学规律和法则，同时简要介绍了当前生命科学的发展动态和前沿，特别是当前关注的转基因生物和生物安全性知识。为宣传和普及生命科学的*新发展进展，《生命科学概论》还适当介绍了人类学和生物技术方面的知识。课程在传授生物学知识的同时，将引导学生去关注食品安全与环境污染对生物的影响，以及生物学中新技术出现对自然、生态及整个人类的影响，增强学生的自身健康与保护环境意识及社会责任感。
