Through his dedication and proficiency, he rose to the position of Senior Examiner in 1878, serving until 1885. In the same year, the establishment of the independent Scotch Education Department took place in Scotland. Craik was appointed as its Secretary, a significant position he held from 1885 to 1904. Additionally, in October 1901, he was conferred with a law degree from the University of St Andrews.
