Synopsis

J. S. Rao graduated from Andhra University in 1960 with B.E. in I Class Honours. He then received M.Tech., Ph.D. and D.Sc. from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Besides his teaching at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur and Delhi, he taught at the University of Surrey, Guildford, England; National Institute of Applied Sciences, Lyon, France; Concordia University, Montreal, Canada; Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, N.Y., USA; Technical University, Kassel, Germany; National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan and the University New South Wales, Sydney, Australia as a visiting professor. He has been consultant to several industries India and abroad, e.g., Garden Reach Workshops, Kolkata; Research Development and Standards Organization, Lucknow; Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., Hyderabad; Twyflex Couplings Ltd., Twickenham; Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Washington, D.C., Stress Technology Inc., Rochester, N.Y., ISRO, Trivandrum. He has guided 30 Ph.D. students and published 250 papers. He is a member of several scientific societies and made significant contribution to their growth, notably, the International Federation of Theory of Machines and Mechanisms. He has received several awards significant of them being ISROMAC Award from U.S.A. He has recently established the Vibration Institute of India.
