The present state of Andhra Pradesh was created in 1956 by merging the Telangana region of the former princely state of Hyderabad with the coastal region of Andhra and the Rayalaseema region of the Madras State. With the city of Madras allocated to Tamil Nadu, it was necessary to include revenue-surplus Telangana in Andhra Pradesh to create a financially viable state. Despite several agreements, laws and government orders, the modern history of Telangana is one of exploitation, agitation, assurances and broken promises. Hard-hitting and vocal, this volume dissects the Telangana problem from its inception to the point where a separate state seems to be inevitable.
