The year is 44 BC and Julius Caesar is at the height of his powers, bestriding "the narrow world" like "a Colossus". A conspiracy is formed by a group of Roman senators who realize that for the republic to be saved, Caesar must be assassinated. But the senators have different motives: some are spurred on by envy of Caesar's greatness and others, by their patriotism and love for Rome. Unwittingly, they set the course for one of the bloodiest civil wars in history and the eventual collapse of the great Roman republic.

William Shakespeare (26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet, and the "Bard of Avon". His works, including collaborations, consist of approximately 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.
With a few useful sound effects to set the stage--a fanfare of trumpets, the clash of swords or thunder--and a few sections summarized to ease the transition from stage to radio, this CBC production is quite accessible. Early on, the production is somewhat muted; lines are delivered more quietly, and less anxiously, than one might expect when murder and portents are being discussed. However, the later sections are striking. The complex crowd scenes come through clearly, and Mark Anthony's famous "Friends, Romans, countrymen" speech at Caesar's funeral is delivered in rich tones that ring from it every ounce of irony and drama. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Julius Caesar is a key link between Shakespeare's histories and his tragedies. Unlike the Caesar drawn by Plutarch in a source text, Shakespeare's Caesar is surprisingly modern: vulnerable and imperfect, a powerful man who does not always know himself. The open-ended structure of the play insists that revealing events will continue after the play ends, making the significance of the history we have just witnessed impossible to determine in the play itself. John D. Cox's introduction discusses issues of genre, characterization, and rhetoric, while also providing a detailed history of criticism of the play. Appendices provide excerpts from important related works by Lucretius, Plutarch, and Montaigne. Seller Inventory # 9788129101914

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Oh! How the mighty do fall. Julius Caesar's life is a story of drama and tension like no other, and Shakespeare's play is a timeless rendition of his final days. When Marcus Brutus is swayed by the conniving Senate of Rome, led by the lies of Caius Cassius, he agrees to betray his close friend, Julius Caesar to their cause. Caesar ignores the words of a soothsayer who tells him of his doom, and is soon assassinated by Brutus and the Senate. This play is signified by its timeless diction, the dialogue has entered mainstream popular culture and it has influenced many movies, novels and comic books. Shakespeare composed Julius Caesar in about 1599, using as his source Sir Thomas North's translation of Plutarch's lives, which had been published about twenty years earlier.
