Henry Spenser Wilkinson was an English military historian, writer, and academic recognized for shaping the study of military history as a serious discipline. Born on 1 May 1853 in Hulme, England, he was the son of Henry Wilkinson and Mary Wilkinson, whose support contributed to his early intellectual development. He was educated at Oxford, where he cultivated a deep interest in history, politics, and military affairs. Wilkinson became the first Chichele Professor of Military History at Oxford University, establishing a foundation for the academic study of warfare and strategy. His writings focused on analysing military organization, leadership, and the relationship between political decision making and battlefield outcomes.
