मधुकलश की भूमिका में बच्चन जी ने लिखा है, "ये कविताएं सन् 1935-36 में लिखी गईं और सर्वप्रथम 1937 में प्रकाशित हुईं। इसके पहले मधुशाला 1935 में और मधुबाला 1936 में प्रकाशित हो चुकी थीं। मेरे जीवन का जो उत्साह, उल्लास और उन्माद-गो उनमें एक अभाव, एक असन्तोष, एक निराशा की व्यथा भी घुली-मिली थी-मधुशाला और मधुबाला में व्यक्त हुआ था, वह अब उतार पर था।" आगे लिखते हैं, "ये कविताएं जीवन के रस से खाली नहीं हैं और जीवन का रस मधु ही मधु नहीं होता, कटु भी होता है... समर्थ के हाथों अमृत भी बनता है।"
