From the Preface: "Painting is one of the most important forms of art, which can be appreciated by the scholars and laymen alike. Artists have used several types of media and treatments to these for best possible representation of their feelings. Unfortunately, since the painting is a complex combination of organic and inorganic materials behaving differently to environment, it is very vulnerable to deterioration. It is because of this delicate nature of these paintings, that several of them all over the world have been lost for ever. Indian miniature paintings, executed in water sensitive paint, generally on paper, are particularly sensitive because of the lack of protective layer, such as varnish to protect these from hostile environmental factors. Miniature paintings collection is one the most important collections of Indian Museums. Many books and articles have been written on the historical and stylistic aspects of Indian miniature paintings, but there is not much literature on their conservation. The predominance of oil paintings over the miniatures at the international scene, perhaps, has been responsible for the publication of much more number of books and articles on oil paintings all over the world, as compared to those on miniature paintings. The basics in the restoration of miniature paintings are not much different from that of other forms of paintings. But due to the specific materials and technique used in these, the technicalities involved in the restoration of miniatures are rather peculiar. Since the time I entered this field of art conservation in 1966, my interest has been to work on paintings, particularly miniatures. This was the natural choice among the paintings because of this being the main collection of the National Museum, New Delhi, in which I have been working. The lack of published information on the conservation of Indian miniature paintings has always been felt during all these years. Though lately a few publications on the subject have appeared, I thought a publication with thrust on practical aspect of conservation would be useful for the practicing conservators. This book is the product of 39 years of my experience in the actual conservation of miniature paintings, mainly in the collection of National Museum, New Delhi. This long experience, however, does not mean that it is and end in itself. On the contrary, I have found that the more one learns about a subject, more is the realization that there is much more yet to be learnt.". Seller Inventory # 60061
