A BASIC RENDERING OF ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST RELIGIOUS EPICS. The Bhagavadgita or Sacred Song holds an assured place among the world's great scriptures. In fourteen hundred lines of verse, the relationship of man with god-and the intense joy of divine love-are celebrated in language that is precise and beautiful. The Gita is a tale of action, taking the form of a dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna on the eve of a battle.Krishna teaches the fearful Arjuna the need for action and the requirement that he-like all mankind-take this place in the world in love and faith.Only through the search of God and the Absolute will the true self be discovered. This edition of the Bhagavadgita offers the Sanskrit text as well as Radhakrishnan's English translation and a commentary which has become a classic. His clear understanding of the profound wisdom contained within the Gita ensures an equally clear vision of it's powerful and eternal message, one that can not fail to touch the minds and spirits of all those who reach for it.

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, (Telugu: September 1888 17 April 1975) was an Indian philosopher and statesman. He was the first Vice-President of India (1952 1962) and subsequently the second President of India (1962 1967). One of India's most influential scholars of comparative religion and philosophy, Radhakrishnan is thought of as having built a bridge between the East and the West by showing that the philosophical systems of each tradition are comprehensible within the terms of the other. He wrote authoritative exegeses of India's religious and philosophical literature for the English speaking world. His academic appointments included the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta (1921 ?) and Spalding Professor of Eastern Religion and Ethics at Oxford University (1936 1952). Among the many honours he received were a knighthood (1931), the Bharat Ratna (1954) and the Order of Merit in 1963. His birthday is celebrated in India as Teacher's Day on 5 September.
