In this compelling collection of essays, Rabindranath Tagore, poet, philosopher, and the first Asian Nobel Laureate, offers a profound critique of aggressive nationalism. Written during a time of global unrest and colonial rule, Nationalism urges readers to look beyond narrow patriotism and instead embrace a universal spirit of humanity. Drawing from the contexts of India, Japan, and the West, Tagore reflects on how unchecked nationalism can stifle culture, conscience, and creativity. His insights, shaped by deep spiritual and ethical conviction, remain strikingly relevant in today's divided world.

Paperback. Condition: Good. Nationalism by Rabindranath Tagore is a thought-provoking collection of essays exploring national identity, political philosophy, humanism, culture, and freedom. Written during an era shaped by colonialism and international conflict, Tagore examines the rise of modern nationalism and questions what may be lost when political organization, power, and national interest are placed above human dignity and moral responsibility. Drawing on his reflections on India, Japan, and the West, Tagore considers the relationship between nations, individuals, societies, and cultures. Rather than rejecting cultural identity or love of one's country, his essays challenge aggressive and exclusionary forms of nationalism while advocating greater understanding, ethical responsibility, intellectual freedom, and cooperation across cultural boundaries. Rich in political thought, anti-imperial reflection, cultural criticism, humanism, and social philosophy, Nationalism explores tensions between the individual and the state, patriotism and universal humanity, tradition and modernity, and political power and personal conscience. Tagore's distinctive combination of philosophical argument and literary insight encourages readers to examine how collective identities can both unite communities and create divisions. Concise yet intellectually substantial, Nationalism is ideal for students, scholars, and readers interested in Rabindranath Tagore, Indian political thought, colonial history, nationalism, international relations, and social philosophy. Its exploration of freedom, culture, conscience, and global responsibility makes it a valuable work for understanding Tagore's broader vision of humanity and society. Why should readers pick this book? A Distinctive Voice on Nationalism & Society: Explore Tagore's reflections on national identity, political power, cultural freedom, and the relationship between individuals and organized states.
