Synopsis

North-Eastern region of India consists of the contiguous seven sisters (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunanchal Pradesh) states and Sikkim. It is ethnically distinct from the other states of the country. More than 2000 Km. of boundary is shared with other countries. These states comprised of 72 district; 39,946 villages and 245 towns. The region is underdeveloped in terms of livestock production than rest of the country. Very few organized industries are available in this region. This region known for its unique culture, handicrafts, martial arts and scenic value. Problems including insurgency, unemployment drug addiction and lack of infrastructure. Since beginning of the economic liberalization in 1990, studies have shown that this region is lagging behind the others in terms of development.
