Synopsis
The sophistication in instrumentation over the years has necessitated the knowledge in traditional areas like design of optical components, optical filters, photoelectric sensors, thin film deposition techniques, skills in handling high pressure cylinders and flames, discharge lamps, followed by electronic circuits, displays / readout systems, microprocessor/ micro-controller and use of modern test and measuring instruments. The successes in effective troubleshooting measures depend upon adequate use of knowledge and skills in these areas. With heavy emphasis in curricula and teaching for both undergraduates and post graduates for theoretical formulations in science subjects, the art of experimentation has suffered irreparably. Repairing, servicing and maintenance of instruments is a serious problem in educational sector all over the country and additionally the problem is compounded by short of grant- in ñaids from state government and scientific establishments. There has been little understanding in educational sector as regards to instrument maintenance that deterioration, decay, obsolescence are inevitable and universal consequences of ageing process and aim of maintenance is to slow down these effects.
