'This book is intensely practical and gives detailed account and instructions of surgical operations. It is illustrated with plenty of full-colour photographs, diagrams and tables and is suited for preoperative reference rather than intraoperative use as a vade mecum. Overall the book has great value as a detailed overview of the field of phacoemulsification, which nevertheless tries to break down the concepts into basic principles. It is good to see a specific chapter on 'Phacoemulsification for Residents'. This chapter focuses on issues relevant to trainee ophthalmologists and the learning curve which is inevitable in any medical procedure. The meat of the book, for many, will be the third section on 'Phacoemulsification: The Surgical Technique.' At 142 pages, this is the longest individual section and one which begins with a consideration of the basic procedure of phaco. Equipment, phacodynamics, intraocular lens implantation and essential surgical technique are covered and the section goes on to deal with more specialised and technically challenging issues. It can be recommended to practitioners working in the field as a comprehensive and wide-ranging yet detailed overview. The basics are covered for the resident and trainee, while the more advanced practitioners have sections on difficult and challenging issues to negotiate.' --AS REVIEWED IN EUROTIMES MAY 2006 by Seamus Sweeney MD
