History of India : Ancient History (Vol.1) by P.C. Jain, R.S Raman The volume one covers from Paleolithic period to 647 AD when the last Gupta ruler Harshavardhana passed away. Only in spirit, not in the history’s manifest body, in fixing these dividers the volume has its rationales. The finds of early Stone Age the Paleolithic period, constitute the earliest evidence of the presence of a living entity in whose endeavor reflected a mind like the man’s. He sought to protect him with whatever he had around : mere stone-pieces turned into tools, and struggled to survive. The period before could be an age of biological growth and hence not this book’s sub-ject-matter. In the hands of some feeble and ineffectual rulers the line of great Gupta dynasty sustained beyond 647 but the glory lost with the death of Harsh was never regained. P. C. Jain, the editor of ‘History of India’, an instinc-tive poet, linguist and aesthetician, began his career in 1961 as a university teacher.
