Translating a work tike Hannaman is a daunting task and it took me years to complete it. 1 cannot claim that it is a good one, but that I tried my best. While Jaya's memoirs were written in a straightforward "journal" fashion, I decided to divide them into chapters for the convenience of the reader. 1 added footnotes so that non-Indian and non-Bengali speaking audience will understand them better. Her journal or memoirs of the prison days is written in Bengali and is termed "Hannaman" or who is killed'. Of all the fascinating things she says about her prison years, what I find most interesting is this: "I was a revolutionary before., but in prison my consciousness underwent a thorough change; 1 became a true revolutionary." As 1 started reading the book, with the author, my consciousness also underwent changes and I kept thinking how majority of the world's poor live and how the State and prison has been created to save us, the privileged from those who are underprivileged. It is rather interesting that often women are brought into "Safe Custody" of the prison only to be tortured more. Several things are fascinating about these memoirs. How the State considers the mentally challenged "non -human" and how they are treated in the prison. The real significance of the memoirs, is however, the way women collectively resisted prison authorities and tortures.
