Synopsis

A race to reclaim an ancient Indian artifact set against the Afghan wars between India, Pakistan and the West. Three Americans meet at Tara Pandey s party in Delhi and can t see the tsunami coming. Already Soviet troops are being deployed in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Don Kolchek arrives in Delhi to announce that he s the first to decipher the Indus Valley script on an ancient Harappan seal. When Jody Curran leaves Delhi on her travels, she is wearing it around her neck, assuming it to be a cheap copy. Mike finds out that Jody's seal is the missing treasure and follows her to Pakistan. But Captain Avinash of Indian Military Intelligence wants Mike's Pakistani uncle, Spinda a mujahideen commander -- to provide intelligence on the war in Afghanistan. Mike, meanwhile, is wanted in the US, Nepal and now in India as well. On the run, Mike and Jody s destinies seem to be taking them straight into Afghanistan into the heart of the turmoil of the Soviet occupation. And what of the missing Harappan seal?

About the Author

Ruth Laila Schmidt and Lars Martin Fosse are JAY CHANDELLA, co-authors of The Harappan Seal. Schmidt is emeritus professor of Urdu at the University of Oslo. She has lived and worked for almost two decades in India, Pakistan and Nepal, and has visited Afghanistan twice. She was awarded two Fulbright grants to India and spent four years in Pakistan as Field Director, Berkeley Urdu Program. The Harappan Seal is her first work of fiction since leaving university (where she won second prize in the University of California Short Story Contest). Fosse has a Ph.D. in Sanskrit. He works as an independent translator in Norway, specializing in military subjects. He also translates from Sanskrit. He has lectured on the Soviet War in Afghanistan and is published on the subject in the Norwegian Military Journal (2008). His translation of the Bhagavad Gita was published by Yogyavidya in 2007 and he is currently working on a translation of the Kama Sutra for them. His translations of military works are published by Spektrum Forlag in Oslo. II.
