Serious work on “Wild Rice” was started 1800 onwards in various countries of our Globe, Particularly in Japan, Chicago, Carolina, Minnesota and New Orleans. However, more detail research programmes were from North America, Taiwan, China, etc. in late 1900s. In India, there are two species of wild rice viz., Zizania Latifolia and Zizania aquatica. The former species is confined paricularly in Manipur as a natural home (Gimson, 1940; Mundkur & Thirumalachar, 1946, 1952; Bor, 1973) and some parts of Assam (Meebold, 1940). The latter species is growing in Patna, India (Thirumalachar, 1952). The research programme in this respect highlighted in this book is an original report of the former species in Manipur context. The author made investigations on a smut fungus (Melanopsichium esculentum syn. Ustilago esculenta) associated with the formation of hypertrophied gall of Z. latifilia in various parameters, so as to understand the host-parasite interactions of the two organisms and food value of the gall. He reported for the first time the condition of 8-9 internodes apical culm infection, the habitat of wilfd rice at the top of Koubru Hill, Manipur about 2500 m above the msl and the mode of infection of the smut fungus. He has attempted to investigate various parameters which are well represented in this volume. It is highly helpful to students, researchers who are interested in this field.
