The present book has been prepared to meet the requirement arising out of increasing interest of Geographers and other Social Scientists in Statistical methods. It covers a wide range of techniques, commonly used by the regional analysts and presents them in a simplified mathematical language. Major emphasis is laid on the purpose, underlying assumptions, computations and the interpretations of the various techniques. The choice of each technique has been demonstrated by choosing real problems under Indian conditions and data base. The book deals with graphical representation of data, measures of central tendency and dispersion, introductory probability theory, sampling, test of significance based on large samples and small samples such as T-test & F-test, chi-square test, theory of correlation and regression near neighbour analysis, rank size rule, gravity and potential model, network analysis, measures of disparities, diversities and inequality. Moreover, an attempt has been also made to discuss the multivariate methods. A chapter has been devoted to matrix algebra which precedes the chapter covering multiple regression analysis, principal component analysis and discriminant analysis.
