The present work aims at an analytical and interpretive study of Vyaktiviveka, a great classic in Sanskrit poetics written by Mahimabhatta, the 12th Century Kashmiri poetician. Mahimabhatta is famous in Indian poetics as the doughty polemist ligician who endeavored hard to divest Anandavardhana's Dhvani theory of its halo of mystery. His thought is of astounding originally and depth. In his masterly exposition, Professor Rajendran analyses the intricate philosophical and linguistic questions raised by the author in all their ramifications and puts the work in proper perspective. For the first time, Vyaktivivekais here treated as an original work propounding its own philosophy rather than a polemical text simply criticizing Anandavardhana's Dhvani doctrine. Professor Rajendran also explores fascinatingareas like mahimabhatta's orientation to various philosophical systems, especially medieval Buddhisticlogic. Translations of some key passages of Vyaktiviveka are also appended to the work. "A very significant contribution to Alankara studies" - Professor K. Krishnamoorthy.
