The book is a sequel to The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. It presents further adventures of Mowgli, the lost boy raised by a pack of wolves in the jungles of India and brought up on a diet of jungle law, loyalty and fresh meat from the kill. He learns the law of the jungle from his animal friends. It features five stories about Mowgli and three unrelated stories, all but one set in India. Also, it contains light poems.

Rudyard Kipling (December 30, 1865- January 18, 1936) was one of the most popular writers in English in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He achieved distinction in every genre he wrote short story, novel, children's literature, poetry, travel literature and science fiction. Kipling's best known works include The Jungle Book, The Second Jungle Book, Just So Stories, Puck of Pook's Hill Kim, Mandalay, Gunga Din, The Man Who Would Be King, Life's Handicap, The Day's Work, and Plain Tales from the Hills. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907, making him the first English language writer to receive the prize.
