Synopsis
Studio Orientalia’s edition of this famous travelogue is based on the first edition of 1862 published by Saunders Otley& Co. The text has been expertly retyped and newly formatted according to the original. 12 coloured plates, 2 of them folding panoramas in orginal size, nurmerousline-drawn illustrations and decorations to the text. Our intention was to march from Simla due north to Lè, the capital of Ladâk ; thence west- ward to Sreenuggur, the capital of Kashmir; thence in a south-easterly direction viâChumba, and Kangra back to Simla, — in all, a circuit considerably over one thousand miles.This scheme was carried out in its integrity by only two of the party…. For travellers who, like us, were anxious to see as much as possible in three short months, and were not disinclined to rough it, I can conceive no better route, leading us as it did through every vicissitude of Himalayan scenery, over the high table-lands of Thibetan Tartary, into the verdant vale of Kashmir, and so back through the tamer but scarcely less beautiful scenery of the lower ranges of the Himalaya, to the tea-planted slopes of the Kangra valley, at which point the traveller may consider his wanderings in what has been called the Alpine Punjab at an end. Hardcover. Condition: New. 2nd Edition. Captain Thomas has made sketches of the most striking features of the country round Simla; which have been lithographed in the tinted manner by Messrs. Dickinson and published in a folio volume. They are spirited and effective in style, and drawn on the stone with a freedom that is more agreeable than laboured and formal execution; besides being characteristic of the rapid and vigorous pencil of a soldier. These views are remarkable for the variety of climate indicated in them: a water-fall dashing down from a rocky cleft amid trees and herbage, reminds one of Scotland; a sunny hill covered with verdure studded with villas, and having pine-trees rising in the foreground, resembles Italian landscape; and presently we are among dreary solitudes, where mountain-peaks covered with perpetual snow, the crevices bristling with pines, call to mind the sublimity of alpine scenery: occasionally a verdurous plain skirted by wooded heights presents an English aspect; but the recurrence of stupendous masses of rock, with a river forded by Indians, recalls the tree locality; and the vast scale of almost every scene proclaims its Oriental character.
