Based on a large corpus of spoken academic English, this study focuses on the dyadic rhetorical concessive relation, on both its formal and functional aspects. Published in a limited academic edition of 300 copies. The object of analysis in this book is the discourse rhetorical relation of concession in academic spoken American English, and the major objective that the author set himself is to expand our current knowledge of the relation by showing means of realisation of the relation, functions that it performs, and the way in which it operates in the academic discourse. To this purpose, the study is divided into three parts. The first part is devoted to a general description of the discoursal domain in which concession is to be studied. The second part establishes a theoretical background for the study of concession, and the third part concentrates on the analysis of concession in the academic discourse.
