Two small marks on outer page edges, else clean and bright throughout with firm binding and unmarked text, free of stamps and inscriptions. Spine free of vertical creases. Price label inside the rear cover. -- In their well-researched and absorbing book, the authors describe a personal chronicle of the 108 martyrs, murdered by the Nazis between 1939 and 1945, whom John Paul II beatified in Warsaw on 13th June 1999. The martyrology of the church in the 20th century has thus been enriched by 108 new heroes and heroines, amongst whom were: 3 bishops, 52 diocesan priests, 3 seminarians, 26 religious priest, 7 professed brothers, 8 professed sisters, and 9 lay people. This is the proof that the animosity towards Christians - the 'odium fidei', or hatred of the faith - was implacable. The historical research of this book ends in 1945. It is a shock to one's conscience to think that this persecution was then immediately replaced by another, of a different shade. -- The book gives a biographical account of the 108 martyrs. Our blood runs cold in the face of their testimony. It is an unsettling spiritual experience to read the words that sum up the details of each one of them. There are no universally famous names such as Maximilian Kolbe, Titus Brandsma or Edith Stein, all of whom have previously been canonised. Here is a generation of 'unknown' Christians who continue to speak to each one of us. They speak with the boldness of truth and with their love for justice. They are people who remain alive because they have contributed in a determined manner, albeit often a silent one, to the writing of history. This book, published at the end of one millennium, is a warning for the coming millennium. It reminds us that martyrdom is always part of the life of the Church; the witness of the martyrs remains the most eloquent. Seller Inventory # 009894
