This book contains 17,949 names of Polish Jews registered in the preserved documentation of KL Auschwitz prisoners. The vast majority of Polish Jews - victims of Auschwitz - perished anonymously with estimated figures ranging from 300,000 to 380,000. Most Polish Jews were murdered elsewhere: in the extermination centers of Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, and Majdanek, as well as in mass executions nearby or in their places of living. Approximately 150,000 died of starvation or as a result of epidemics in ghettos. Of the Jews murdered in Auschwitz the largest part was directed to the gas chambers immediately after unloading from transports. Overall more than one million European Jews were killed there. The research covers the whole period of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp's operation from July 14, 1940 until its liberation on January 27, 1945. Names in this work are not arranged alphabetically, but rather chronologically by source, with most sources ordered by prisoner number. Use of the accompanying CD-ROM's searchable index is advisable for locating references to an individual name.

Of the Jews murdered in Oswiecim (Auschwitz) the largest part was directed to the gas chambers immediately after unloading from transports. Overall more than one million European Jews were killed there. Our research covers the whole period of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp's operation from July 14, 1940 until its liberation on January 27, 1945. Beginning in 1942, Jews started to prevail among the KL Auschwitz victims. The documents of the State Museum in Oswiecim enabled us to establish only about 1,300 names of Polish Jews transported to the camp before January 1942. Between the second half of 1941 until January 20, 1942, at least 614 Polish Jews were killed in the camp. On May 4, 1942, selections started among Jewish prisoners of Auschwitz. Those selected were sent to gas chambers. Starting on July 4, 1942, selections were conducted among the newly arrived on the train ramp. Most were immediately directed to the gas chambers. For example, the lists published include those few Jews from the Lodz ghetto, who had not been immediately directed to gas chambers and were assigned camp numbers. If no other archives are mentioned, all annotations in the text, referring to historical sources (archives) relate to the KL Auschwitz Museum (Archiwum Panstwowe w Oswiecimiu - ????).".
