Egyptian Scarabs and Seal Amulets From the Collection of Sigmund Freud

9788386956500: Egyptian Scarabs and Seal Amulets From the Collection of Sigmund Freud

Egyptian objects are a prominent constituent of the collection of antiquities accumulated by Sigmund Freud in the years 1896-1938. Along with the entire collection, these objects are now in London, housed in the study and consulting room Freud used in the last year of his life after he had been forced to leave Austria. Hitherto these objects have not received very much attention, although some have been noted or mentioned in a handful of special studies. Alongside the more spectacular items, the collection includes a group of 79 Egyptian scarabs, scaraboids and seal amulets, 23 of which have been shown to be counterfeits. The subject of this catalogue presentation is the remaining group of 56 items which offers an interesting prospect for study. They have been further divided into different sub-groups according to decoration type. The oldest specimen is the cylinder seal of Khafre, while the remaining items cover the periods of the Middle and New Kingdoms, down to the final stages of Egyptian civilization. Apart from the scarabs and scaraboids the catalogue also describes a clay mould bearing the name of Tutankhamun and used to make bezels. Other categories worth special mention here include a group of several Hyksos scarabs, and a group of scarabs with phrases, not all of which are decipherable beyond a reasonable doubt. There are also some Menkheperre-type scarabs, and scarabs inscribed with the name Amun or Amun-Re. Another noteworthy specimen is a scarab with a back in the shape of hypselogenia species. The arrangement of entries in this catalogue follows the usual scheme; the dimensions are given in the order of the object's length, width, and height (thickness).
