The history of Jewish religious buildings in Lodz, Poland is strictly connected with the history of the entire denominational community, as well as with the history of Jewish society in the city. It mirrors both the comparatively free - against the back-cloth of the entire city - growth of this community in the first half of the 19th century, as well as the stormy development in the period post enfranchisement, having its reflection first of all in the constant growth in the number of houses of prayer. Furthermore, the history of Lodz's synagogues has been influenced by the conflict between the supporters of reformed Judaism and Orthodoxy, which resulted in the creation of the synagogue at Kosciuszko Street. Its mark was also left upon the progressing differentiation in wealth levels, and most of all, in political differences resulting in the opening of prayer houses not only for various Hasidic groups, but also for parties and political leanings, the most remarkable example of which is the Zionist synagogue 'Ohel Jakow'...
