The award-winning illustrator Miguel Ángel Díez was born in Aspe, Alicante, Spain in 1973. He defines himself as a self-taught illustrator and his first works appeared published in 2007
When Oscar’s increasingly forgetful grandfather puts a chicken in the washing machine, roasts a sweater, and irons a fish, his parents decide that Grandpa Monty should come to live with them. In this Spanish import, gentle first-person narration blends with charming, magical realist illustrations to depict Oscar and Grandpa Monty’s special relationship. Despite his grandfather’s muddles, Oscar still manages to find humor, such as admitting that trying to turn on the TV with an eggplant is funny. After learning the importance of exercising one’s memory, the young boy shares his homework with Grandpa Monty, and he tries to slow down his grandfather’s dementia by looking at old photographs and covering the house with sight words. Although he recognizes that his grandfather is still declining, Oscar continues their memory exercises by making topical albums. His final appeal to readers, “Do you make albums with everything you learn, too?” is reinforced by the endpapers, which feature numerous art supplies. Pair with Grandpa Green (2011) for another loving look at aging. Grades K-2. --Angela Leeper
