El propósito de esta obra es analizar el papel que ha desempeñado la cultura del libro en el desarrollo del pensamiento occidental y reflexionar sobre los efectos que puede tener el ocaso del libro y de la palabra escrita como principal medio de reflexión, formación y comunicación. Para ello se abordan cuestiones como la importancia de la lectura y de la escritura en la formación del pensamiento, el surgimiento de las escuelas y de las universidades alrededor del libro y las consecuencias que los modelos de pensamiento asociados al libro han tenido en nuestra cultura, junto con temas candentes como son el libro electrónico, la superviviencia de las bibliotecas o la informatización de la educación.
