Se hablaba de un escritor cercano al realismo que había llegado, como por casualidad, a producir dos libros cuya relevancia nadie podía negar, aunque sus fuentes fueran o bien del todo conocidas (como la ubicua vinculación con William Faulkner) o bien inexistentes. Según esta última versión, Rulfo habría absorbido todos sus rasgos estilísticos y temáticos del medio que lo rodeaba, principalmente de su entorno rural y su historia familiar. En contraste con tales nociones, el ensayo de Víctor Jiménez que da título a este libro examina el rastro de dos autores europeos en la obra narrativa de Rulfo. Muchos son los ecos de Rilke y Broch en los cuentos de El Llano en llamas y la novela Pedro Páramo.
