Grade 4-6-Although he can still remember a few sounds, like his parents' voices, the purring of his cat, and the sound of falling rain, Horacio is deaf as a result of a childhood disease. He lets his eyes do the "hearing" for him. One of the things he likes to watch most is the building across the street, so different than the rest of the buildings on the block: it has wooden arches above the front door, stone columns on each side, and, inside the arch, a beautiful stained glass window showing a bird made of fire. This type of architecture, we learn later, is typical of the Spanish province of Catalonia. One day, on his way back from school, Horacio sees the front door open and ventures in, uninvited. The inside of the house has even more beautiful details and Horacio is dizzied by them. The owner of the house, Beatriz, isn't open to Horacio's friendship at first. However, following a car accident that leaves her temporarily disabled, their friendship flourishes as they both learn to deal with their disabilities. Readers of this short novel will be delighted with the exquisitely written narrative, rich in details such as the description of a painting by Spanish painter Miro and a poem by Federico Garcia Lorca. The well-developed characters and multilayered plot add texture to the story. Horacio's coming to terms with his deafness while helping Beatriz overcome her grief is well achieved.
