Antonio Buero Vallejo nacio en Guadalajara en 1916 y murio en Madrid en 2000. En 1933 ingreso en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Madrid, pero su vocacion pictorica fue cortada por la guerra civil de 19361939. Dedicado a la soledad, al pensamiento y a la lectura durante muchos anos, afloro su vena dramatica para bien de las letras espanolas. Introvertido y de poderosa inteligencia, Buero Vallejo es un magnifico lector, alerta y profundo, a cuya curiosidad nada es ajeno. Su tema y problema es el de la desvalida criatura humana en un tiempo critico: el hombre en busca de la libertad por caminos de conocimiento y amor. Buero Vallejo ha sabido igualar vida y pensamiento, conducta y predica. De su lucidez y de su ejemplaridad, de su trabajo, ha surgido el teatro de mas altura, tension y trascendencia de la posguerra espanola. Con Historia de una escalera, hito en la recuperacion teatral de Espana, gano en 1949 el premio Lope de Vega. En 1972 ingreso en la Real Academia Espanola. En 1986 recibio el premio Cervantes y en 1996 en Nacional de las Letras, siendo la primera vez que este premio se concede a un autor exclusivamente dramatico.

En 1937 se alista en el ejército republicano, y terminada la guerra, es detenido y condenado a muerte por su participación en actividades clandestinas. Finalmente se le conmuta la pena por la de treinta años de cárcel, y en 1946, sale en libertad condicional. Consigue el Premio Lope de Vega en 1949 con Historia de una escalera, que es representada en el Teatro Español y con la que obtiene un rotundo éxito.
