Grade 3 Up. An excellent translation of this heartrending story. Sadako is a girl with big dreams. She wants to be part of the school track team and works hard to build up her endurance. When she collapses after a training session, doctors discover that she has leukemia as a result of radiation exposure from the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Secluded in the hospital, she learns how to fold paper cranes and she starts a project of making 1000 of them with the hope that they will heal her. The plot is simple and straightforward. The story is moving and sad but Sadako's character is so strong that the telling never becomes maudlin. Delicate and realistic illustrations enrich the text.?Judith Rodriguez, New York Public Library
