Gr 5-7-In this suspenseful and very funny novel, Bernardo, 11, is supposed to start as goalie in the hockey final on Saturday morning, but he wakes up with flu symptoms. More than the game itself, he worries about disappointing his father, his biggest fan. When efforts to reach their family doctor fail, father and son rush to the emergency room for what they hope is a miracle cure. Unfortunately, that does not occur. When the father comes back from the pharmacy and finds that his son is not in the car, he assumes that Bernardo decided to play after all. (In reality, the child has gone home to call the coach.) The man goes to the school and assumes that the boy with the goalkeeper's mask is his son. When the goalie crashes with a member of the oppostite team, Bernardo's father rushes to help him and discovers that there is another man doing the same thing. After the adults argue about whose son is on the ground, the mask comes off and the boy identifies himself as the substitute goalie. At the end of the day, despite the frustrations, both Bernardo and his father know that their love is the most important thing in the world. The man's narration is hilarious and will keep readers turning pages to the end.-Judith Rodriguez, New York Public Library
