Reviews
Gr 2-4--Saltapinos is an enormous white, furry, mountain-dwelling giant. He wishes to explore the city, but the cold terrain he must cross freezes his feet. One day, he finds an old umbrella and a sweater in the woods and, using his creativity, knits himself a pair of socks. Armed against the cold, he ventures into civilization to discover fast-paced urban life, including noisy machines (cars and trucks). Reactions to this huge figure are mixed. Children consider him a novelty and follow after him in hopes of finding out if he is made of snow. Horrified adults run for cover. Exasperated, Saltapinos flees back to the safety of his mountain home. His socks, which he loses on the highway, are the city's only reminder of their encounter with "the big white giant." Each page of text is matched with an amusing pen-and-ink and watercolor illustration. An easy-to-read adventure.
