But to achieve what they did, each needed the influence of a contemporary—one who was equally ambitious but possessed sharply contrasting strengths and weaknesses.Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas were close associates whose personal bond frayed after Degas painted a portrait of Manet and his wife. Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso swapped paintings, ideas, and influences as they jostled for the support of collectors like Leo and Gertrude Stein and vied for the leadership of a new avant-garde. Sebastian Smee es crítico de arte del Boston Globe desde 2008. Obtuvo el Premio Pulitzer en 2011, tras años de quedar finalista. Empezó a trabajar en el Globe desde Sidney, donde había sido crítico de arte para The Australian. Antes de eso, vivió en Reino Unido, donde colaboraba con medios como The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Art Newspaper, The Independent, Prospect y The Spectator. Ha sido coautor de cinco libros sobre Lucian Freud. Da clases de escritura de no ficción en el Wellesley College.
