Nacio en 1932 en General Villegas, provincia de Buenos Aires. En 1951 inicio estudios en la Universidad de la capital argentina. Mas tarde estudiaria cine en Roma, gracias a una beca, en el Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. Posteriormente trabajo como ayudante de direccion. Publico novelas que se han traducido a varios idiomas: La traicion de Rita Hayworth, Boquitas pintadas, The Buenos Aires Affair, Pubis angelical, Maldicion eterna a quien lea estas paginas, Sangre de amor correspondido, Cae la noche tropical, El beso de la mujer arana, ademas de algunas piezas teatrales, adaptaciones escenicas o guiones cinematograficos. Murio en Cuernavaca, Mexico, en 1990. Es considerado uno de los novelistas mas representativos de la literatura latinoamericana.
