En 2006 recibió el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras. Es miembro de la American Academy of Arts and Letters y Comandante de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras de Francia.

Su obra está traducida a más de cuarenta idiomas. Vive en Brooklyn, Nueva York.

He is the author of the books Squeeze Play (1982), written under the pseudonym Paul Benjamin; The Invention of Solitude (1982); The New York Trilogy (1987), consisting of the novels Crystal City (1985), Ghosts (1986) and The Locked Room (1986); The Country of Last Things (1987); The Palace of the Moon (1989); The Music of Chance (1990); Runway (1990); Auggie Wren's Christmas Story (1990); Leviathan (1992); The Red Notebook (1992); Mr. Vertigo (1994); Hand to Mouth (1997); Timbuktu (1999); Experiments with Truth (2000); The Book of Illusions (2002); The story of my typewriter (2002); Oracle Night (2003); Brooklyn Follies (2005); Travels in the Scriptorium (2006); A man in the dark (2008); Invisible (2009); Sunset Park (2010); Winter Journal (2012) and Report of the Interior (2013); and the scripts for the movie Smoke (1995) and Blue in the Face (1995), in which direction he collaborated with Wayne Wang, Lulu on the Bridge (1998) and The Inner Life of Martin Frost (2007), which he directed by himself.

His Complete Poetry was published recently. He has edited the stories book I Thought my Father was God (2001). He has received numerous awards, among which stand out the Medicis Prize for the novel Leviathan, the Independent Spirit Award for the screenplay of Smoke, the award for best book of the year of the Madrid Booksellers Guild for The Book of Illusions, the prize What to Read for Oracle Night and Lethe Prize; He has been a finalist for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for The Book of Illusions and of the PEN / Faulkner Award for The Music of Chance.

In 2006 he received the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature.
