The Emigrants is a melancholic story, not at all epic, about rootlessness. Sebald relates the lives of four exiled people (five, if you include his own indirect self portrait) through their own narrations, alien memories, photographs, and found objects. What first appears to be a simple tale of four Jewish émigrés to Norfolk, Austria, the United States and Manchester is in fact an evocation of the exile experience and the loss of ones homeland. It is the poetic retelling of a spoken story that rebels against those to try to forget. Strange, marvellous and terribly moving.
