Un polvoriento dia de verano llaman al doctor Faraday a Hundreds Hall, la mansion de los Ayres. Faraday ya habia estado alli cuando era un nino y su madre era una de las criadas de la casa. La senora Ayres aun es una senora elegante, que mantiene como puede su dignidad. Roderick, su hijo, ha vuelto de la guerra cojo y enfermo. Se ocupa como puede de la casa y de la hacienda, y va vendiendo las tierras y la familia se va comiendo el capital. Su hermana Caroline, independiente, excentrica y masculina, ha tenido que volver a Hundreds Hall para ayudarlo. Pero los Ayres han llamado al doctor Faraday para que se ocupe de Betty, la joven criada de catorce anos, que quiza solo esta enferma de miedo, aterrorizada por aquello que percibe en la casa. Porque siempre son los ninos y los animales los primeros en advertir lo siniestro. Y aunque nadie la cree, en Hundreds Hall se oyen ruidos inexplicables, se ven sombras fugaces y marcas de fuego en las paredes, y las cosas mas familiares pueden volverse atrozmente perversas. / On a dusty summers day Doctor Faraday is called to Hundreds Hall. Faraday had already been there as a child and his mother was one of the servants in the house. Now he is a doctor, although in an uncomfortable social position within the rigid English class system, and he thinks this visit is a coincidence. But Hundreds Hall is now nothing more than a shadow of its former self: the upholstery hangs in tatters, the woodworm fattens itself on the interior of the house and weeds cover the gardens.

Sarah Waters has a Ph.D. in English literature and has been an associate lecturer withthe Open University. She has won a Betty Trask Award, the Somerset Maugham Award, the CWA Ellis Peters Historical Dagger Award, the South Bank Show Award for Literature, and her books have been short-listed for the Mail on Sunday/John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, and the Man Booker and Orange prizes.
