Se considera que â El árbol de la cienciaâ es una de las obras primordiales de Baroja. La novela queda dividida en dos partes simétricas separadas por una larga conversación filosófica entre el protagonista y su tÃo, el doctor Iturrioz. En la primera de ellas se narra la vida de Andrés Hurtado como estudiante de Medicina en el Madrid de finales del siglo XIX, y es, en gran parte, autobiográfica. A través de su familia, profesores, condiscÃpulos y amistades diversas, Baroja traza una despiadada radiografÃa del Madrid burgués y proletario de la época. En la segunda parte se nos cuenta la estancia de Hurtado como médico en Alcolea. Se aprovecha para trazar un retrato fidedigno de la penosa situación del campesinado: caciquismo, ignorancia, desidia, resignación, etc. Después le sigue el retorno a Madrid (donde se aborda el tema de la prostitución) y, finalmente, el desgraciado matrimonio del protagonista con Lulú.
