La obra de Cela llena gran parte de la literatura española de los cincuenta últimos años del siglo XX. Desde el principio, y sin necesidad de someterse a ningún control ideológico, supo separarse de la España oficial y escribir unas obras críticas que pusieron de manifiesto el desánimo y la miseria económica y social en que había sumido al país el nuevo régimen. Aunque el autor tiene interés por presentar su obra como testimonio, no se limita a registrar unos hechos, sino que realiza una importante elaboración literaria.
