Leopoldo Alas Clarín (1852-1901). España. Su padre era gobernador civil en Zamora. Comenzó sus estudios en León, en el colegio de los Jesuitas, y a los siete años marchó a Oviedo. En 1871 ingresó en la Universidad de Madrid y continuó los estudios de Derecho y Filosofía que había iniciado en Oviedo. Había vivido la revolución del 68 y fundó con sus compañeros Tomás Tuero, Pío Rubin y Armando Palacio Valdés la tertulia de la Cervecería Inglesa de la Carrera de san Jerónimo, llamada también Bilis Club por la agudeza de las críticas que en ella se hacían. En 1875 usó por primera vez el pseudónimo Clarín para firmar en El Solfeo. También escribió en La Unión, El Progreso, Gil Blas y La España Moderna. Hizo un periodismo ágil y atrevido, en artículos que llamaba paliches. En 1882 fue nombrado catedrático de la Universidad de Zaragoza y al año siguiente vivió en Oviedo, ciudad en la que provocó gran escándalo la publicación de la novela La Regenta (1885), la cual, junto con Su único hijo son consideradas las dos grandes novelas naturalistas españolas del siglo. Estos libros retratan con dureza la sociedad provinciana de Vetusta, ciudad imaginaria semejante a Oviedo. Clarín murió en 1901.
