Synopsis

Written 14 years before the sinking of the Titanic, this brief novel tells the story of a transatlantic ship called Titan, which had been declared impossible to sink but does exactly that when it collides with an iceberg in the northern waters of the Atlantic. The tragic accident serves as the backdrop to the story of John Rowland, an alcoholic and former U.S. Navy officer who is working as a deckhand on the Titan when it sinks, and who saves the daughter of a former lover by jumping onto the iceberg with her. The two are faced with hardship and adventure on the iceberg—including a fight with a polar bear—until they are saved by a passing ship that returns them to the United States, where Rowland is able to improve his life and regain his position in society. The real-life Titanic and the Titan in this novel share many similarities, from their weight, length, and capacity to the fact that they were both exceedingly luxurious and carried an insufficient number of lifeboats.
