Condition: Como nuevo. : Compilation of texts on the subject of violence by all sorts of authors throughout history. It was part of Brumaria's contribution to Manifesta 8, along with a video-installation in the old jail of San Anton in Cartagena, Spain. Brumaria has been working on the relations between art / multifocal war / terrorism since 2008. The result of it all has been a series of theoretical and practical works: 'Art and Terrorism', 'Iconoclasm-Iconolatry' and now 'Expanded Violences', which, through different formats -research and exhibition projects, artwork, seminars and publications- have allowed us to observe the amplitude of the matters discussed and the conceptual, thematic and discursive gaps that still persist in the global art institution. We cannot simply abstract contemporary art from the world in which it occurs and is perceived, especially when you consider the current characteristics of armed conflicts and you find that we live in a permanent state of war. While war was defined in the past as a conflict between sovereign nation states, in recent decades this sovereign authority of the nation-state has been declining for the emergence of a supranational sovereignty. Today, the nature and conditions of both war and political violence have undoubtedly and considerably changed, beating out the memory of those who have been defeated. War in our current situation is a Total phenomenon. We live in a state of ubiquitous, atrocious and permanent «civil war», a new state of emergency covered by a social and legal climate of Systemic Violence. Expanded Violences approaches a triangulation between violence as a representation strategically managed by power structures, the use and abuse of violence by mass media, and the role of art as a critical vertex of this multiple dialectic. While the mutual dependence between political and economic powers and mass media strategies is quite obvious, the role of art in this context is not as clear.
