With the death of Charles IV, the Capetian dynasty comes to an end, and the ascent of the Valois to the French throne unleashes the Hundred Years' War. Collective fate and individual tragedies play out in this sixth volume of the saga as the novel revives a time so turbulent and characters so outlandish that—were they not known to be historical figures—would seem fictitious.

With the death of Charles IV the dynasty of the Capetians is extinguished. The ascent of the Valois to the throne of France unleashed The Hundred Years War ... The seed of the huge confrontation has fallen on fertile ground in the economic rivalry, personal ambition, the legal entanglements and historical resentments. Collective fatalities and individual tragic events occurred in this sixth volume of the saga of The Accursed Kings. A character dominates these crucial years in Western Europe: Count Robert of Artois. Nobody has put more efforts to crown his cousin Philip of Valois than him and now expects to receive in payment the return of his ancestral lands...
Maurice Druon was a French resistance hero, a Knight of the British Empire and a holder of the Grand Croix de la Legion d'Honneur. He was also a member of the Academie francaise and a celebrated novelist, best known for his series of seven historical novels under the title of The Accursed Kings, which were twice adapted for television. A passionate Anglophile, he was a great expert on all things English, including its medieval history, which provides great inspiration for the series.
