En 1943, fueron deportados a Auschwitz en un tren de mercancías y los separaron, yendo Eddy a parar al barracón 9 y Friedel al 10, en el que se realizaban los experimentos médicos. Cuando los rusos iban aproximándose a Auschwitz en el otoño de 1944, los nazis decidieron borrar sus huellas y se ordenó a los prisioneros, entre los que se encontraba Friedel, que fueran replegándose hacia el interior de Alemania, en lo que después se conocerían como «marchas de la muerte». Eddy, en cambio, se escondió y se quedó en Auschwitz, donde encontró un lápiz y un cuaderno y se puso a escribir.
