Synopsis
Cuando Berceo escribe los Signos el hombre del siglo XIII está lejos de los terrores del Milenio. Las gentes de hacía más de dos siglos vieron pasar al año 1000 sin que el mundo saltara en pedazos. Algunas señales fueron exageradas. Sin embargo, la angustia colectiva ante la creencia del findel mundo y la consiguiente liberación de Satanás, ni fue general ni estuvo localizada en un año determinado. Entre los que interpretaban al pie de la letra el texto del Apocalipsis que asignaba al mundo una duración de mil años a partir de Cristo, había quienes contaban desde su nacimiento, otros desde su Pasión. Peroel terror se fue disipando. La Iglesia había hecho particular hincapié en resaltar que sólo a Dios le correspondía señalar la hora en que había de comenzar la noche de los tiempos. (...)Las 77 estrofas de los Signos son, según Berceo, su versión particular de un sermón de San Jerónimo.
