Cincuenta anos despues de la aparicion de La colmena, la novela de Camilo Jose Cela que abrio nuevas perspectivas a la narrativa contemporanea, era imprescindible entregar al lector una edicion revisada y puesta al dia.Esta actualizacion la ha llevado a cabo el profesor Adolfo Sotelo Vazquez tomando como base la edicion que Raquel Asun Escartin preparo en 1984 con joven mano maestra para Castalia.Asi, el texto de la novela, el aparato critico y la introduccion de la profesora Asun se mantienen en esta nueva edicion debido a su rigor y profundidad, y la labor de Sotelo se ha cenido a completar la Introduccion biografica y critica de Camilo Jose Cela desde la fecha de publicacion de aquella primera edicion hasta la actualidad, ampliar el capitulo sobre Bibliografia selecta y anadir la seccion Camilo Jose Cela y la forja de la novela (1942-1951) con el proposito de ser una declaracion de los ingredientes esteticos que conforman la naturaleza y el caracter de la narrativa de Cela desde La familia de Pascual Duarte hasta La colmena. Por ultimo, Sotelo ha incluido un apendice sobre La recepcion de la primera edicion de La colmena. Con el ha querido mostrar al lector el horizonte historico literario en el que se produjo la obra, y lo ha conseguido aportando textos de unos grandes lectores como Melchor Fernandez Almagro, Antonio Vilanova, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, Ricardo Gullon, Jose Maria Castellet y Arturo Barea.Tanto los estudiosos de la obra de Cela como los lectores no especializados encontraran en estas paginas una edicion manejable y rigurosa.Raquel Asun Escartin fue profesora en la Facultad de Filologia de la Universidad de Barcelona.Adolfo Sotelo Vazquez es catedratico de Historia de la Literatura Espanola.
