Virgilio empezó a escribir la Eneida en el año 30 a.C. tras la victoria de Augusto en Accio, animado por el propio Emperador, y aún no la había concluido cuando en el año 19 le sobrevino la muerte. Augusto encargó a Plocio Tuca y Lucio Vario que revisaran el poema y lo publicaran sin ningún añadido. Se trata de un poema épico de unos 9.896 versos escritos al estilo homérico. Narra la huida de Troya y las aventuras de Eneas hasta llegar al Lacio, donde tiene que luchar con diversos enemigos para lograr establecer la nueva Troya, según el mandato de los dioses. Pero más allá de esta simple trama se deja sentir una honda significación política: se ocupa, por connotación, de la historia de Roma y del pueblo romano, enlazando su origen con la gloriosa épica homérica y proporcionando a la conquista romana de Grecia una suerte de desagravio histórico por la caída de Troya.
