Synopsis

La aparición del intelectual antiguo va unida a la invención de la escritura como exigencia de la Administración civil y religiosa, expresada por primera vez en rudimentarias tablillas de cuentas. En el umbral de la historia, surge el escriba monopolizador de la palabra escrita. En las culturas del Cercano Oriente, una clase ociosa de sacerdotes y escribas estableció las bases legitimadoras del sistema político dominante. En Israel, se desarrolló una profecía extátia, que no se dió en Egipto ni en Mesopotamia. La elaboracion intelectual de los profetas hebreos abrirá las puertas del racionalismo ético del Occidente, preludiando la figura del intelectual crítico. En Grecia, toma cuerpo la intelectualidad occidental, siendo el poeta y el sofista los primeros prototipos del espíritu europeo. Después de la revolución llevada a cabo por Sócrates y los sofistas, las escuelas de filosofía representadas por la Academia y el Lilceo albergan las figuras del filósofo y el científico, que simbolizan Platón y Aristóteles. A su vez, en las grandes culturas orientales de India y China, el intelectual se desarrolla a través de los dos tipos del brahmán y el mandarín, que responden a concepciones opuestas de la vinculación entre religión y poder político. La aventura del intelectual antiguo se mueve ya entre la legitimación y la crítica del poder.The appearance of the ancient intellectual is linked to the invention of writing as a requirement of civil and religious administration, expressed for the first time in rudimentary accounting tablets. On the threshold of history, we witness the emergence of the scribe who monopolizes the written word. In the cultures of the Middle East, a leisure class of priests and scribes laid the foundations that legitimized the dominant political system. In Israel, there was an upsurge of ecstatic prophecy which did not occur in Egypt or in Mesopotamia. The intellectual development of the Hebrew prophets would open the doors of Western ethical rationalism, heralding the figure of the critical intellectual. Western intellectuality takes shape in Greece, the poet and the sophist being the first prototypes of the European spirit. Following the revolution brought about by Socrates and the sophists, the schools of philosophy represented by the Academy and the Lyceum accommodate the figures of the philosopher and the scientist, symbolized by Plato and Aristotle. In turn, two types of intellectual emerge in the great Oriental cultures of India and China, the Brahman and the mandarin, which correspond to opposing conceptions of the link between religion and political power. From then on, the adventure of the ancient intellectual swings between the legitimization and criticism of power.
